Movies are therapy, but what does that mean?
Hello and welcome! My name is Kit Lazer (to those that know my work online) and I’m delighted that you’re here to share my love of stories, specifically the ones told in pictures.
A little bit about me
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved movies. I’d beg my mom to take me to the local video store as often as possible and, thankfully, she never paid much attention to what I rented. Be Kind, Rewind was the maxim I lived by. We were poor and I was an awkward kid, so I was practically raised by the TV, like The Cable Guy (but with far less dire results).
I grew up making my own movies and writing fantasy novels. I went to college to study English Literature and Philosophy with the notion of becoming a professor. I had the best laid plans but I struggled with alcoholism and addiction. I took a detour. In short order I found myself alone and frightened, with nothing but a stack of DVDs and no more big dreams.
Those movies saved my life. They allowed me enough of a human connection to make it through one more day, enough days in a row to find sobriety. I’ve been sober over twelve years now and I’ve spent much of that finding the ability to dream again, to create.
Over the last few years I’m grateful to say I’ve been able to build a sizable audience talking about the movies and TV shows that were there for me when I needed them most. It will never not be amazing to me that I get to do this for a living.
I want this space to serve the community that I’ve built, to share our passion without regard for virality or mass consumption—just honest discourse and appreciation. I need you here to make that dream come true!
What does a Movies Are Therapy subscription get you?
Free subscribers will get access to frequent written reviews of a wide variety of film, TV, and streaming releases and essays, as well as snippets of the longer videos that the paid subscribers have access to.
Paid subscribers get full access to the newsletter and publication archives as well as frequent video reviews of current new releases, past legends of the silver screen, and cult classics of every genre. We’ll watch things live together and chat about all of the latest film/TV news. Whether it’s streaming or in theaters, a limited series or multi-camera sitcom — if it’s on a screen, I’ll watch it and, God help me, I’ll talk about it.
